Pierre Lenordez

1815-1892

Biography

Lenordez  (1815-1892 ) exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1855 to 1877. There is anexample Le of his work in plaster in the Museum of Avranches “CaptainEstonville at the Defence of Mont Saint Michel”, but horses are his subject; inhis animalier sculpture Arab stallions, usually named, and mares and theirfoals, predominate. Jane Horswell

Horses were Lenordez’s main subject matter and after hisdebut with a wax model entitled ‘The Baron’ which was shown at the Salon of1855 he continued to exhibit regularly up to 1877. His horses ranged from ArabStallions, brood mares, and foals to Hunting and racing scenes.

Born in 1815 in Vaast, in the district of Manche, Lenordezsettled in Caen where he built his reputation as an Animalier sculptor. He isparticularly known for his accomplished models of horses. His style, similar tothat of the racing paintings produced in the early nineteenth century is veryrecognisable. Notably the shape of the head, thin nose, flared nostrils andalert eyes. He joined many horse racing groups and received commissions forportraits of known horses. Thus, his sculptures represented real sportinghorses, winners of important races in the equestrian calendar or horses who hadstrong blood lines and were responsible for siring a succession of outstandingwinners. Indeed, many of his sculptures have plaques giving details of the nameof the horse, the race it had won, the year and sometimes even the lineage.

Much of Lenordez’s work was cast by either Boyer or Duplanet Salles, both of which were known for producing good quality crisp detailedcasts. A typical patina is dark brown to black, with golden highlights, resulting in a nicely worn effect on some of the models found today.

Lenordez exhibited at the Salon in 1855 where he exhibited awax model of a stallion called ‘The Baron’ who stood at the Imperial Stud inthe Bois de Bologne, Paris, France. He continued to exhibit at the Salon until1877.
