An exceptional 19th century engraving by Charles G. Lewis after the painting by Rosa Bonheur. The painting was sold at Christie`s in 1861 and passed through several ownerS until being last sold at Sotheby`s New York in 2007 for 252000 USD.
This superb engraving was part of the Baron Von Schroeder collection bought at Christie`s in the late 20th century. An engravers proof, signed in pencil by Charles Lewis and bearing the Printsellers Association blind stamp of Authenticity. It was published by E. Gambart and Co. Oxford Street, London on 1st Sept. 1859. It is in exceptional condition never having been framed, and an engraving that rarely comes to market and is unlikely to again in this condition.
It is presented mounted with 4 inch borders. The image size is 35.5 inches by 20.5 inches, overall size including mounts 44.5 inches by 31 inches approx.
Donkeys and mules were a favoured subject of Rosa Bonheur but this is also considered one of her most spectacular landscapes.
